Introduction
This page goes into various ways to measure and reduce power consumption.
The main culprit in my house is probably computers... normally there are at least 6 computers running with as many as 9+, 3 of which have monitors (2 LCD and 1 CRT). More about that later.
Some of my computers are more power-greedy than others, I think.
Monitors
The CRT is more 3x inefficient than the LCD monitors according to [1].
- Typical CRT monitor will use 120 watts
- Typical LCD monitor will use 40 watts
Easy choice, ditch the CRT (e-waste) and get an LCD.
Computers
A couple of my computers are actual servers, the Sun E220R and HP Proliant 470. I suspect they might be culprits, but the only way to know ( I think) is to either take a manual measurement or buy a Kill-A-Watt and plug in directly through that.
